Chiang's mother Hung-wei and father Yim-dut were very popular movie stars. He began his acting career at a very early age, appearing in black and white films when he was only four years old.

His real English name is John; David is a stage name given to him by film director Chang Cheh (his Chinese name also sounds like "David").
