A.S. Byatt was born Antonia Susan Drabble on 24th August 1936 in Sheffield. Byatt's father was a lawyer, and her mother a schoolteacher.

Her mother was also one of the first female graduates from Cambridge. Byatt went to Sheffield High School and then followed her mother's footsteps to attend Cambridge University.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Byatt held various teaching and lecturing positions.

She became known in literary and academic circles, gaining a full-time lecturing position at University College London. She was also appointed as one of the judges on the panel for the prestigious Booker Prize.
